SEA WORLD RESCUES HUMPBACK WHALE!
On the morning of Thursday 26 June, the Sea World Rescue team released an entangled Humpback Whale. The rescue team was alerted about the distressed whale by Sea World Whale Watch’s vessel, out on their early morning whale watching tour. After spotting the whale towing a piece of rope around its tail, the crew called the Sea World team and informed them of the distressed animal’s location. They arrived very quickly and the guests on the boat were able to view part of the rescue.
The Sea World team caught up with the whale 4 nautical miles off Southport and used rescue boat, Sea World 2, to attach several large orange floats to the whale, to slow it down and make it easier to follow. The team could see said that the whale was obviously in distress as it was covered in sea lice and spending large amounts of time on the surface.
The team worked to slow the whale down with the floats so they could make a close inspection of the fishing gear and determine the best way to free the entangled whale. It was determined that there was a rope wrapped around the whale’s tail lobe, which had also been partially severed.
The Sea World team used a large extension pole with a specially designed blade to cut the rope free. The whale remained on the surface for a few minutes and then dived under the boat. Sea World believes that it is quite possible that this whale had towed the rope all the way from Victoria
The Sea World Rescue Team has seen many seriously injured Humpback Whales over the years and is hopeful this whale will be able to make a full recovery.
